This 300-square-foot ADU transforms the airspace above an existing garage into a secluded "urban treehouse." By seamlessly integrating the new addition with the original structure through matching cedar shingle siding and a complementary gabled roofline, the project feels like a natural evolution of the site rather than a cramped afterthought. The exterior design uses pronounced dormers to create out essential headroom and floor area, while a private wooden staircase leads to an elevated entry that reinforces the home's sense of detachment from the floor below.

Inside, the compact floor plan defies its small footprint through the use of a soaring vaulted ceiling and a strategic placement of windows. The main level has a light-filled living area and and kitchen and utilizes built-in cabinetry throughout for efficiencies. Despite the limited square footage, the design successfully integrates a full bathroom and a tucked-away washer/dryer unit, ensuring the unit functions as a self-contained residence.

The transition to the sleeping loft is handled with a custom wood-slat partition that provides safety and separation without blocking sight-lines or natural light. This upper loft is large enough to house both a queen-sized bed and a dedicated desk/work area. Positioned directly beneath a large skylight and framed by the gabled roof, the loft offers a literal "treetop" perspective, proving that thoughtful spatial planning and light can make 300 square feet feel remarkably expansive.
